Jury selection has started in the trial of Hackensack Police Chief Ken Zisa.

He was suspended without pay in 2010 after being charged with official misconduct and insurance fraud.

Prosecutors say Zisa removed his girlfriend from the scene of an accident in 2008 in which she was suspected of being intoxicated. Authorities allege he then filed false information in an insurance claim.

The chief's also accused of covering up an investigation stemming from a 2004 assault and robbery in which his girlfriend's sons were suspects.

The chief's attorney says the case is based on testimony from police officers who stand to gain financially from his conviction.

Jury selection was due to start Monday morning, but several issues -- including logistical matters and a fire alarm activation -- delayed the process.
