Gymboree latest retailer to close stores in New Jersey
TRENTON — The New Jersey brick-and-mortar retail landscape is about to get smaller with the closing of seven Gymboree stores.
The children's clothing retailer joins Sears, Kmart, JCPenney, Payless, HHGregg and Radio Shack to close locations this year in the Garden State.
Gymboree in a message to customers explained they are going through a court supervised financial restructuring. The company filed for bankruptcy in June and will close as many as 450 stores.
“Right-sizing our store footprint is a central part of our efforts to ensure Gymboree emerges from this restructuring process as a stronger and more competitive organization, with greater financial flexibility to invest in our future. Importantly, we will continue to operate a majority of our stores and will continue to deliver quality merchandise and superior service to our customers at our Gymboree, Janie and Jack and Crazy 8 brands," Daniel Griesemer, President and CEO of Gymboree said.
Closing sales will begin on Tuesday nationwide including the seven Gymboree and one Crazy 8 locations shutting down:
- Eatontown - Monmouth Mall
- Edison - Menlo Park Mall
- Freehold - Freehold Raceway Mall (Crazy 8 location)
- Hackensack - The Shops at Riverside
- Hamilton (Mercer) - The Shoppes at Hamilton
- Hamilton (Atlantic) - Hamilton Mall
- Sea Girt - Brook 35 & West Plaza
- Short Hills - The Mall at Short Hills
The closure still leaves 13 locations around New Jersey.
Sears and Kmart announced another round of closures last week that did not include any New Jersey locations. Earlier the store announced that Kmart stores in Clementon, East Brunswick, Pleasantville and Rio Grande would close.
Longtime Sears locations in Vineland and Watchung area also closing.
