Gun Buyback Program Yields 218 Weapons

A two-day gun buyback program offering an anonymous means for surrendering weapons at locations in Asbury Park and Rumson brought in 218 guns over the weekend, Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor announced.

The final tally of weapons includes five assault weapons, 126 handguns, 39 shotguns, and 24 rifles. Four inoperable weapons and 20 BB-guns were also surrendered. Among the assault weapons surrendered was a Colt AR-15, a Mossberg assault shotgun and a World War Two-era Japanese bolt-action rifle.

“These weapons will never be used to commit a crime, they can’t end up in the wrong hands of the wrong person and no one will be injured or killed because these weapons will never have the opportunity to be pointed at a human being. Case closed. All these weapons will now be destroyed,” said Gramiccioni.

The two-day program disbursed $15,000 for the surrender of the 218 weapons at Shiloh Community Fellowship Church, 142 Dewitt Ave., Asbury Park and the Rumson Police Department, 80 East River Road.

On Friday, 80 firearms were surrendered: 35 in Asbury Park and 45 in Rumson.

On Saturday, 138 firearms were surrendered: 58 in Asbury Park and 80 in Rumson.
