Governor Christie Supports Reforming NJ’s Red Light Camera Program [AUDIO]

Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon has introduced a bill to extend yellow light times at intersections where red light cameras are operational, and reduce the size of the fines for a red-light camera ticket.

During last night’s “Ask The Governor” program, Governor Christie said his office is working with O’Scalon on the bill, but there’s a limit to what he can do.

“Remember, our obligation is to enforce the law the way that it is written,” Christie explained, “These legislators wrote this law this way and our job is that we have to enforce the law, but we’re happy to work with him on changes to the law that would make it fairer based on real life experiences that people are now having with the system…We’re ready to work with him, and hopefully the Democratic legislature will be willing to work with him too, so we can get a solution to the problem.”

Christie said it’s become obvious that “we need to make some changes to the program – and those changes can only be made legislatively. I can’t, by executive decision, do anything other than suspend the program…Now if they want to change the law, which it looks like there’s sentiment to do that, I’m happy to participate with them in it. Believe me, this wasn’t my idea in the first place…This isn’t like a Christie program that I have a stake in and I feel very strongly about, but I also, as Governor, can’t go off and say things like, ‘Yeah, let’s abolish it.'”

When asked if he would ever support efforts to do away with red-light cameras, he said, “I’d want to talk to the folks who started it in the first place to find out why, and whether they would agree to it.”
