Governor Christie is expanding a successful program – currently being offered in Gloucester County - that helps homeless veterans get back on their feet.

The Veterans Haven program – that serves vets in Winslow Township – will be replicated in Glen Gardner, Hunterdon County – on the grounds of Hagedorn Psychiatric Hospital, once that facility closes later this summer.

Veterans Haven North will start up in partnership with Freedom House, an innovative long-term residential drug and alcohol treatment program in a halfway house setting.

After touring the facility this morning, Governor Christie said “we’re launching a partnership that continues to honor the commitment of the brave men and women who serve our country, and provide a safety net for veterans who have fallen onto difficult times…approximately 83 hundred veterans in New Jersey find themselves out on the streets and homeless…and that’s just a totally unacceptable reality.”

The Governor said “our veterans have sacrificed in their service to our state and our country, and it’s our duty to try to provide a hand when they need it the most…we owe these brave men and women of New Jersey nothing less, and we want to work with all the different groups that we can to try to make it better…after being medically evaluated at a VA hospital, eligible veterans will be able to participate in a long-term program focusing on psychological, social and vocational needs to help them.”

Startup funds for the project total 2-point-3 million dollars, and are included in the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and the Department of Human Services’ Fiscal Year 2013 budgets.
