Eight-year-old Ayanah Paxton of Queens was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after the crash occurred Monday in South Brunswick. Her mother, who was driving the SUV, and a 17-year-old passenger were injured in the accident.

State police say 48-year-old Pricilla Paxton was driving in a southbound lane when she apparently lost control of the SUV just before noon. The vehicle slid across the highway and hit a barrier before overturning.

Pricilla Paxton and 17-year-old Maurice Corney of Jamaica Plains, N.Y., were both being treated for undisclosed injuries.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
