Services for Mount Arlington Officer Joseph Wargo took place Friday morning at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Alpha. Among the mourners were dozens of officers from police departments around the state.

Authorities say Michael Cassella of Howell was driving under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into Wargo's patrol car on Route 80 early Sunday. The 29-year-old is held on $500,000 bail, charged with aggravated manslaughter and vehicular homicide.

Wargo, who was 38, leaves behind a wife.

Friends described Wargo as a boisterous but soft-hearted man who was eager to help anyone in need.
