The Port Authority says changes in weekend service could expedite restoration of 24-hour PATH service in a week to 10 days.

Trains will operate from Newark to the World Trade Center site this weekend between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

PATH service will be suspended from Newark to 33rd Street via Hoboken.

The Port Authority says a weekend of suspended service provides PATH crews with uninterrupted work time and helps shave days off restoration.

Workers during that period will make repairs to the system, which sustained substantial damage from Superstorm Sandy. Salt water flooded the Hoboken tunnels, shorting out electrical system and corroding equipment.

The Port Authority will provide free shuttle buses at the Hoboken and Newport PATH stations.
