TINTON FALLS — A man with a warrant on assault weapons charges barricaded himself inside a Jersey Shore home on Tuesday.

Ryan M. Russell, 38, had been staying with the owners of a home in the Fox Chase development in Tinton Falls and hid in the attic after police responded to a call at 8:14 a.m. about loud banging noises coming from the home, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.

Gramiccioni said the officer who initially came to the home noticed a man in the back yard go into the house. The residents said all was OK. Just to be sure, the officer ran a check on the home and found Russell's warrant, according to Gramiccioni, who said the officer returned to the home after trusting his "instincts."

The officer was allowed to enter the home, but police and the residents left after hearing a noise coming from the garage.

Police called the Monmouth County Emergency Response Team to the home, according to Gramiccioni. Authorities tried to get Ryan to come out. Gramiccioni said police eventually entered the home and found Ryan hiding in the attic.

He was arrested for the warrant, which was a failure to appear in court on a third-degree aggravated assault charge and weapons possession charges from last October. Charges are pending relating to Tuesday's incident.

Authorities did not say whether the residents knew about Russell's warrant, or how police knew he might be there.

The warrant specified Russell be held without bail.

Law enforcement from the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office, along with police from Little Silver, Middletown and Wall assisted with the standoff.

Tinton Falls Police Captain Gerald Turning Jr. on the department's Facebook page wrote they are appreciative of the public's patience and understanding during situations. "We do our best to balance your rights to information with the fluid and often dangerous situations we are dealing with," Turning wrote.
