Sunshine returns by midday, but a few showers will be possible for part of the Garden State through this evening.

Here are your weather headlines for Monday, December 7, 2015...

Freezing Fog to Sun

I know it sounds incredibly ominous, and like something from a horror movie... but a batch of freezing fog has been impacting New Jersey this morning. This phenomenon occurs from a combination of dense fog and subfreezing temperatures.

So, not only are visibilities very low (especially in South Jersey), but some of the water droplets within the fog are apt to accrete (accumulate) as ice on cold surfaces. Temperatures aren't *that* cold (especially where the fog is thickest), so the ice shouldn't be *that* big of a problem. But this setup still gives reason to use extra caution this morning until the fog burns off and the temperatures warm up.

In fact, this chilly, foggy, frosty start will give way to the return of some sunshine and mild temperatures by this afternoon. High temperatures are expected to rise to the mid 50s across the state. That's similar to Sunday, and about 6 to 10 degrees above normal for early December. Not bad at all!

Chance of Showers

Since the middle of last week, we have been carefully tracking a coastal storm system. All models now agree on an off-shore track, keeping the vast majority of rain and wind impacts away from New Jersey. However, it looks like far South Jersey and the Jersey Shore could be clipped by a few showers starting this afternoon and through the overnight hours (from about 5 p.m. to 5 a.m.) These showers are expected to stay light... And some models - including the GFS and Euro - keep New Jersey mostly or totally dry.

As temperatures fall into the mid 30s overnight, I suppose there could be a few snowflakes among those showers. But again, no major impacts are expected here.

Tuesday and Beyond

Some early morning showers, clouds, and cooler temperatures will greet New Jersey on Tuesday. Highs will be limited to the mid 40s in North Jersey and lower 50s in South Jersey.

Overall, the forecast gets a bit muddled for the middle to late part of the week. A river of weak disturbances will keep some degree of cloudiness over New Jersey, but I think daily rain/snow chances will be nil. Frankly, the cloud cover forecast for Tuesday through Friday is a crap shoot for now - and unfortunately, temperatures will be highly dependent on cloud cover and whether any showers or sprinkles develop. I've opted toward the warm side of forecast possibilities, enacting a warming trend with highs bumping into the lower 50s on Wednesday... mid 50s on Thursday... upper 50s on Friday... around 60 degrees on Saturday... and lower 60s on Sunday.

At the moment, the next storm system of any significance could come late Sunday into Monday. For now, it's just worth watching.
