Florida man admits $30M fake payment card scheme

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- A Florida man has admitted his role in a multimillion-dollar fake payment card scheme.

Sean Roberson entered his plea in federal court in Newark on Thursday. The 39-year-old Palm Bay resident pleaded guilty to two fraud conspiracy counts that carry combined maximum sentences of 50 years, though he likely will serve considerably less time.

Roberson admitted he sold counterfeit payment cards using a website called fakeplastic.net. Criminals used the website to buy counterfeit debit and credit cards as well as holographic stickers that could be used to make fake driver's licenses.

The website filled orders for about 69,000 counterfeit payment cards and more than 35,000 holographic stickers.

Law enforcement officials estimate the counterfeit cards created about $30 million in losses. Roberson said he made more than $1.7 million.
