The U.S. Commerce Department declared a fishery resource disaster a few weeks after the storm. That authorized the fishing industry to receive aid that Congress might approve.

A bill that passed the Senate but died in the House would have set aside $150 million to help fishermen and related businesses make up for lost catches and damage to their equipment. The Belford fishing port in Middletown sustained nearly $1 million in damage, not including lost catch.

Many fishing boats were unable to work for two or three weeks after the storm, and once they were, many of the prized fish species had left the area for the year.
