No injuries were reported in the blaze, which apparently broke out in a three-story building late Wednesday morning in Jersey City. But authorities say the fire soon spread to several attached homes, eventually leaving about 15 families homeless.

Witnesses reported seeing flames shooting out of the building and plumes of black smoke in the air.

Dozens of firefighters battled the blaze for a few hours before it was brought under control.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
