Firefighters have gained the upper hand on a fire that broke out above the Carlstadt Post Office.

The post office, located on Broad Street, is on the ground floor and an electrical supply store is on the top floor. News 12 New Jersey tweeted that MDR Electric Supply had just moved into the building  2 months ago and was completely destroyed in the fire.

Post office boxes and mail pick-up are being transferred to the East Rutherford Post Office at 193 Park Avenue. Home delivery is not affected.

Fire Chief Rob Popejoy tells News 4 New York the flames broke out near the roof of the building on First Street around 1:30 a.m. Thursday. Firefighters say the top floor sustained heavy fire damage and the post office had water damage.

Popejoy says one firefighter was taken to the hospital after he fell from the roof. A second was treated at the scene for minor injuries.Over 100 firefighters from 10 departments responded to the blaze which was under control by 4 a.m. according to ABC 7. Firefighters are still checking for hot spots.

Popejoy says work was being done on the roof on Wednesday, but it's not clear what caused the fire.

 A U.S. Postal Inspector told NBC 4 New York that packages and parcels inside are protected against potential damage ABC 7 reports mail was being moved out of the post office and onto trucks.
