Federal Task Force Looks at Flood Insurance Program [AUDIO]

After hundreds of complaints by irate New Jersey homeowners who had their Sandy claims rejected, the Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force is going to review operations at the National Flood Insurance program.

Governor Chris Christie talks about the Sandy Recovery (NJ Office of Information Technology)

Governor Christie thinks it’s a very good idea.

During a visit to Little Ferry to see how flood reconstruction efforts are going, he said, “I think we need to have a complete re-examination of the program, cause it’s not working as well as it should, and it’s certainly not been working as well as the homeowners insurance has been working in this state.”

“We need to take a look at that intelligently and try to make sure that as we funded the flood insurance program, so it would have the money to pay out the claims,” Christie explained. “We need to make sure those claims are being paid out well, in a competitive way.”

Christie added he’s received dozens and dozens of complaints, and obviously it’s critically important that people “are getting what they deserve for the premiums that they paid.”

“I’m glad the Task Force has decided to take on that issue, and examine it, and I know we’ll have a lot to say from New Jersey’s experience about it.”
