Fearing Chaos, U.S. Wades Into Egypt Turmoil

Fearing a political-military implosion that could throw an important Arab ally into chaos, the Obama administration is wading into Egypt’s turmoil, delivering pointed warnings to the three main players in the crisis: President Mohammed Morsi, opposition protesters demanding his ouster and the Egyptian military.

U.S. officials said Tuesday they are urging Morsi to immediately address the concerns of the opposition, telling the protesters to remain peaceful and reminding the army that a coup would have consequences for American military aid. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

The officials said Washington has not demanded that Morsi take specific steps, but suggested he call early elections, fire an unpopular prosecutor and express a willingness to explore constitutional change.
