FBI adds Plainfield murder suspect to most wanted list
PLAINFIELD — A Honduran man who is in this country illegally is the latest addition to the FBI's 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list.
Walter Yovany Gomez is wanted in connection to the murder of Julio Matute in May of 2011.
According to the FBI, Gomez was a member of the Plainfield Locos Salvatrucha gang, which is part of the larger MS-13 organization.
On the morning of the murder, Gomez and a co-conspirator hit Matute in the head with a baseball bat, slit his throat and stabbed him 17 times in the back with a screwdriver, the FBI said. The motive for the murder was a belief that Matute had been socializing with a rival gang member. The co-conspirator was arrested and ultimately convicted with Matute's murder.
The original arrest warrant for Gomez was issued in September 2013. He was charged at the time with violent crime in aid of racketeering and conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering.
"Gomez has been charged with a violent and brutal murder which took a young man from his family," Special Agent In Charge Timothy Gallagher from the bureau's Newark office.
Gallagher said he was "pleased" that Gomez had been added to the most wanted list and added, "we urge anyone with information related to this horrific crime to come forward. We will never forget, and will not rest until Walter Yovany Gomez is located, captured, and brought to justice."
The FBI said Gomez goes by several aliases including "Cholo," Walter Rios Gomez, Walter Yovany Rios Gomez, and Geovany. He is described as being between 28 and 33, standing 5 feet 7 inches, and weighing 160 pounds. He was last seen in Maryland after being driven there from New Jersey.
A $100,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to his arrest. The FBI warns people to not interact with Gomez directly, but should contact their local FBI office or their law enforcement agency. Information should be submitted to 1-800-CALL-FBI. The tips can also be submitted online.
