The father of one of the three people who died in the Boston Marathon bombings was at first told that his daughter had survived, but was in surgery and could lose a leg.

When William Campbell arrived at Massachusetts General Hospital, however, he learned that his daughter, 29-year-old Krystle Campbell, had died.

Krystle's grandmother, Lillian Campbell, told multiple media outlets that her granddaughter and a friend were together at the marathon and lay side by side on the ground after the bombs went off.

Somewhere on the way to the hospital, their names got mixed up.

Lillian Campbell says her son was "devastated" when he found out the truth and almost passed out when hospital officials let him into her room and he saw friend Karen instead of his daughter according to the Boston Globe.

“This doesn’t make any sense"

Krystle Campbell's mother Patricia tearfully addressed the media. “You couldn’t ask for a better daughter. I can’t believe this has happened. She was such a hard worker at everything she did, said Patricia according to the Globe. She paused and added, “This doesn’t make any sense."

Her grandmother described her as "class A. She was the best. Not because she’s my granddaughter. She was like that with all of her friends, and she had a lot of them," remembering when Krystle moved into her home to care for her following an operation.

Krystle Campbell was who grew up in Medford, Massachusetts but had moved to Arlington and worked at Jimmy's Steer House.

"Vibrant, wonderful, cheerful"

She worked summers at Jasper White's Summer Shack in Hingham, Massachusetts. In a statement the famed restauranteur wrote "Krystle was a vibrant, wonderful, cheerful part of the Summer Shack family for nine years," White wrote. “Krystle touched my life, and the lives of all our employees with her constant smile and joyful personality. She was beloved by all of us, and we will miss her deeply. We also extend our heartfelt sympathy and send our prayers out to her family.”

White closed its Boston and Cambridge locations on Tuesday in her memory.
