Fifty-three-year-old Capt. Michael Goodwin plunged onto a second-floor roof of a three-story building in the city’s Queen Village section on Saturday night. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Another firefighter, 28-year-old Andrew Golewski, suffered burns while trying to rescue him.

Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers announced Sunday that Goodwin, a 29-year veteran, had recently taken the test for a promotion to battalion chief. He says the department will be promoting him posthumously.

Ayers says he had been hoping that Goodwin would one day make chief.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
