My daughter shows me her two fingertips. They're puffy, round, and look like cherry tomatoes about to explode. I figured she burned them in the kitchen, like I do about twice a week, and urged her to run them under cold water.

She swore she hadn’t cooked that day, or even the day before. We’re stumped. So I go to my go-to doctor-on-call, Dr. Google, MD, to see if I can diagnose her. A lot of the images looked exactly like her disfigured fingers!

I was terrified, staying up until 2:30 in the morning trying to figure out exactly what it was. I was trying to figure out how to break it to her that she had some horrible autoimmune disease.

From this list of possible diagnoses, see if you can guess what it really turned out to be.

  1. Sclerodactyly (Hardening of the connective tissues of the fingers)
  2. Rheumatoid arthritis
  3. Psoriasis
  4. Allergic reaction
  5. Diabetes
  6. Carpal Tunnel
  7. Insect Bite
  8. Lymphedema
  9. Dislocated joints
  10. Zucchini fingers

If you guessed number 10, you were right.

That’s right. Apparently raw zucchini can cause a strange and unique type of dermatitis that can cause the pads of your fingers to swell and the skin to peel from the inflammation. And from what I saw on the internet, it’s not that rare.

She realized she had cut and peeled a good dozen or so green zucchini right before her “ailment” showed up. Avoided a trip to the emergency room, and in the future, she’ll be handling the green squash with gloves.! You never hear about this on the Food Network.
