Evacuated residents return home as sinkhole repairs continue

SOUTH AMBOY, N.J. (AP) -- Residents of a central New Jersey street where a large sinkhole developed this week have been allowed to return to their homes.

Three homes in South Amboy, including one two-family home, were evacuated as a precaution after the sinkhole on Gordon Street was discovered around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

No injuries were reported in the incident. But officials say one vehicle was totaled after it fell into the sinkhole, which was caused by a water main break.

Town officials say the residents were able to return to their homes Wednesday, even though repair work was ongoing. They were being advised to boil their water as health precaution.
