Environmental groups, Lesniak to argue against Exxon deal

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Opponents are about to have their day in court in an attempt to derail New Jersey's proposed $225 million settlement with ExxonMobil.

A coalition of environmental groups and Democratic state Sen. Raymond Lesniak are set to appear before Superior Court Judge Michael Hogan Friday. They're seeking to intervene in the case.

The coalition of seven groups wants to prevent the settlement from becoming official. They argue the proposed $225 million payout from ExxonMobil pales in comparison to what the company owes the state.

The Christie administration has said since the proposal was unveiled earlier this year that it is a good deal for New Jersey because it's among the largest natural resources settlements in history.

The judge may make a decision in the case by July 21.
