That brings the total number of Emergency Response Trailers provided to Jersey towns to 112. The newest donations will go to West Orange, Lakewood, Aberdeen and Little Ferry.

Mary Goepfert of the Office of Emergency Management says 23,000 volunteers statewide have been organized into 250 Community Emergency Response or, CERT teams.

“We have the personnel, in terms of these volunteers,” Goepfert said. “But now what we would like to do is try to equip them with some resources that they can use.”

She says the trailers contain emergency supplies, traffic cones, first aid kits and other various items responders will need. The State Police Missing Persons unit will also receive a specially-equipped trailer to support child abduction and missing persons searches.

The trailers, which have a price tag of $7,650 each, are funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

April is National Volunteer Month. Goepfert says anyone in the state who is at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license can become a CERT volunteer. You can obtain more information about the program at ready.nj.gov, or by calling 609-963-6995.

State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes said in a press release that New Jersey is home to one of the largest CERT programs in the country.

“The program is robust because of citizen engagement and neighbor helping neighbor, a New Jersey tradition,” Fuentes said in the release. “We will continue to support our volunteers’ efforts by equipping them with resources, such as the Response Utility Trailers.”
