Ecological Advocates Fight Gas Facility [AUDIO]

Another proposal for a liquefied natural gas facility off the Jersey Shore has coastal ecology advocates up in arms.

It was an issue they didn’t expect to have to deal with again but one company is challenging a decision that came down from the state and the Governor nearly two years ago.

Liberty Natural Gas is filing in New York and with the Maritime Administration for the importing terminal. They are proposing it in the area between Long Branch and Long Island. Cindy Zipf with Clean Ocean Action says it’s deja vu all over again.

“It is virtually the same plan that they put forward years back that is only slightly different. They are doing this at the worst possible time and the whole thing could be a big environmental hazard for the sensitive shore economy.”

“The facility wouldn’t just be an eyesore, it would pose issues for the ecology of animals and plant life and could even become a target.”

The first public meeting will be held on July 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Allegria Hotel at 80 West Broadway in Long Beach, N.Y. For more information, call 516-889-1300. Free street parking is available.

The open house and public meeting in New Jersey will take place July 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center, 97 Sunfield Ave., in Edison. For more information, call 732-417-1400. Free parking is available at the center.

An open house at both locations will run from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. before the meetings.

Clean Ocean Action is holding their meeting on July 11 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and a meeting from 6 to 8 p.m., both at the public beach in Sea Bright. For more information, call 732-872-0111.
