Easter weekend in NJ: Rain Friday, then cooler but pleasant
Showers and storms will sweep through the Garden State through Friday afternoon, before a cold front lowers temperatures for the rest of the holiday weekend.
Here are your weather headlines for Friday, March 25, 2016...
Good Friday: Wet, then Warm
New Jersey's weather situation early Friday morning has been, in a word, complicated. A warm front draped across the middle of New Jersey has kept temperatures in the northern half of the state stuck in the 40s, while South Jersey is in the 60s. The bigger weather story for Friday, however, will be a cold front approaching from the west. That front will impact our weather all day Friday.
Two rounds of rain are expected to sweep through New Jersey on Friday. The first batch of showers will push through in the early morning. Our second, stronger line of showers and a few thunderstorms are expected later Friday morning through the early afternoon hours. Overall rainfall amounts will probably end up in the "few tenths of an rain" category - while there could be a few heavier downpours, most of the rain will be light.
By around 2 p.m. Friday afternoon, the rain will be wrapping up for the Garden State. The rest of the afternoon will feature cloudy skies, a gusty wind, and a few hours of warm temperatures. Highs are expected to reach around the 70-degree mark across New Jersey! But the inevitable cooldown is coming...
Pleasant, Seasonable Easter Weekend
The ultimate impact of this cold front will indeed be cooler temperatures for the rest of the holiday weekend, starting Friday night. With a persistent brisk wind and under clearing skies, a frost or even light freeze will be possible by Saturday morning. Low temperatures will bottom out in the 30s. Early-season gardeners, you might consider covering your plants or bringing them inside, just in case.
So yes, temperatures will be cooler this weekend than the rest of the week. But check out the expected conditions for Saturday: mostly sunny skies, light winds, and seasonable temperatures in the lower to mid 50s. Any complaints? I didn't think so.
Easter Sunday will also start off with fair weather and pleasant near-normal high temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. Clouds will begin to increase by Sunday afternoon. And one model (the NAM) suggests a few light rain showers or sprinkles will be possible by late afternoon to early evening. (Even so, no umbrella necessary.)
Another Batch of Rain
Another storm system is forecast to slide into New Jersey's neighborhood on Monday, and will carry a period of steady, potentially heavy rain. The rain looks to start in the pre-dawn hours on Monday, and potentially continue through early evening. Model forecast rainfall totals are surprisingly quite light, around a half-inch at best. It looks like a washout of a day to me, with some embedded thunderstorms, so keep the umbrella handy!
