The East Greenwich 11-12-year-old Little League team will play a team from Maryland Friday afternoon.

"We knew we had a strong group of kids, but we never expected to win state," said head coach Jim Szestowicki.

He said his players don't have a strong-arm, hard-throwing pitcher among them.  "But we are very deep, and we play very good defense behind our pitching, so we should fare pretty well," said Szestowicki.

If the team wins the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament, they will advance to the Little League World Series in Pennsylvania.

He said they aren't thinking about the big time just yet, but the kids are excited and just taking this one pitch, one game at a time.

The fifth and sixth games of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament are scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN and ESPN2.
