The Asbury Park Press, citing unnamed sources, reported investigators found drugs in the home of Brigitte McCarthy and Robert Trella, parents of victim  Maddigan  McCarthy. Police also notified Child Protection and Permanency (CP&P), the agency formerly known as DYFS, as two other children were in the home, the report said.

The couple identified by the Asbury Park Press story as McCarthy, 31, and Trella Jr., 41, reported Maddigan missing to police around 8:30 p.m., Monday night prompting a search of the Bittern Lane neighborhood, authorities have said.  Officers found the girl floating in the shallow end of a neighbor's in-ground pool.

The paper said sources also described the fence around the pool as not much more than rusted out chicken wire. Prosecutor's office spokesman Al Della Fave told NJ 101.5 whether a fence was in place is part of the ongoing investigation by the prosecutor's office, Berkeley Township Police and the Ocean County Sheriff's Department.

Police administered CPR to the girl in an effort to revive her before taking her to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where she was pronounced dead at 9:24 p.m., authorities have said.

No charges have yet been filed in the incident.
