A driver who got out of her car after hitting a tree alongside Route 55 was then run over and killed by another driver who fled the scene, police say.

The accident, reported about 5:40 a.m. where 42 Freeway turns to Route 55 in Deptford Township, caused major traffic delays Friday morning.

Anabel Aponte, 32, of Glassboro, drove off southbound 42 Freeway onto Route 55 and struck a tree. The driver got out of the car to assess the damage and was struck and killed by a second vehicle, State Police spokesman Sgt. Gregory Williams said.

The accident happened before sunrise Friday and during rainy conditions.

Information about the hit-and-run vehicle was not available.
