Snow Greets St. Patrick’s Day in South Jersey

Spring starts this week but winter is getting one last shot of snow on St. Patrick’s Day with higher amounts being called for in south Jersey.

A low pressure front headed up the coast Sunday afternoon and tracked slightly more to the north than expected bringing accumulating snow more to the north.

A Winter Storm Waring was in effect for all of Ocean, Atlantic, Cape May, Camden,Gloucester, Cumberland, Salem counties as well as southern Burlington County while a Winter Storm Advisory was extended to Monmouth, Middlesex and Mercer ile counties and northern Burlington County. Both went into effect at 8 p.m.

NJ Transit will cross honor tickets system wide between trains, light rail and buses on Monday.

Expected accumulation:

  • 8-10 inches in Cape May County
  • 4-6 inches in Atlantic, Salem, southern Gloucester and southern Camden counties and most of Ocean County
  • 2-4 inches along the New Jersey Turnpike corridor including Monmouth County
  • 1 inch or less for the rest of the state roughly north of I-78

NBC 40 meteorologist Dan Skeldon points out that accumulations from this storm will be more difficult than a mid-winter storm due to a warmer ground the the angle of the sun keeping daytime accumulations down unless it the snow is very heavy.

“Winter is not dead yet,”  Szatkowski tells the Star-Ledger, but he points out that the calendar favors an eventual shift to spring-like weather.  Spring starts on Thursday.
