Does NJ School Agency Spend Too Much On Overhead?

An advocacy group is criticizing New Jersey’s school construction agency for the amount of money it spends on overhead.

The Education Law Center reports that the Schools Development Authority spent $114 million on administrative costs the last three years, which was about 17 percent of its $661 million in expenditures.

The legal group is an advocate for New Jersey’s neediest school districts. It says it’s unclear why overhead is higher in New Jersey than elsewhere while construction projects have been slow to get off the ground.

The state authority tells The Record newspaper of Woodland Park the figures don’t take into account that the agency was managing $2 billion in projects during the period. The agency also says it has cut staff by more than 25 percent since 2010.
