Do You Want NJ To Scrap Its Red Light Camera Program?

One of the most vocal opponents of New Jersey’s red light camera program, if not the most vocal, has been Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon. He recently launched an online petition to eliminate it. Today, O’Scanlon says more than 4,000 people have already signed the petition.

“The office was flooded with calls, but it seemed that some folks felt there really wasn’t a vocal outcry to end this failing program,” explains O’Scanlon. “That was why I started this petition and now we have over 4,000 people signed up. Unlike the red-light camera companies, our numbers don’t lie.”

A press release circulated this week by American Traffic Solutions (ATS) claiming that the cameras in Newark have significantly decreased accident rates. O’Scanlon calls that disingenuous.

“The facts are simple: red-light cameras do not improve safety, they are revenue generators and the public is tired of being fleeced,” says O’Scanlon. “The more signatures we compile, the harder it will be to ignore us. We are not going away, and our effort will not be dismissed as a few people making noise.”

The petition has only been up for two weeks, it can be found at: change.org.
