Jim has been discussing the confusion created when NJ residents had not received renewal cards in the mail for their vehicle registration.

Some callers said that they had received their vehicle's registration in the mail, while others said that they only realized they needed to renew their registration when they actually looked at it and realized it was expiring or had already expired.

We later heard from Elyse Coffey, a spokesperson from the Motor Vehicles Commission, who explained that there has been no change in sending out vehicle registration renewals, as the agency is required to do by state law. She said the renewals are sent out two months before current registrations expire-- some 500,000 every month. With that many mailings, she noted, it is always possible for a small percentage to be lost in the mail.

So it is probably a good idea to pull out that vehicle registration and check the expiration date. If you think your renewal card should have arrived by now, you can find email and phone contact information on the Motor Vehicle Commission website and contact the agency directly.
