Yesterday's picturesque blue skies New Jersey are gone, as our weather becomes a bit unsettled and wet before a big cooldown this weekend.

Here are your weather headlines for Thursday, November 5, 2015...

Foggy, Wet, Warm

Most New Jerseyans woke up to dense fog on this Thursday morning. As dew points (a measure of atmospheric moisture) climbed overnight, the air became saturated and thick fog formed as a result. Visibilities hovered below a quarter-mile for much of the state, and I can personally attest to how difficult it was driving in the pea soup fog. Driving conditions have since improved, and the fog will slowly lift through late morning. The Dense Fog Advisory was cancelled early.

Beyond the fog, Thursday will feature clouds and scattered showers and sprinkles amidst our humid air. Rainfall totals are expected to be light - less than a quarter-inch - but some showers this afternoon may be wet enough to warrant an umbrella.

Despite the clouds and despite the rain, temperatures will remain well above normal for early November. Forecast high temperatures are in the 67° to 73° range for today, still about 10° above seasonal norms.

Showers should clear out by Friday morning, and we will eke out dry weather for the daytime hours. Mostly cloudy skies and a stiff southwesterly breeze will prevent Friday from being a truly "nice" day. But thermometers will still climb into the mid to upper 70s... I wouldn't be surprised to see a few 80+ degree readings on Friday afternoon!

Cooldown Part 1: Saturday

A cold front will push through New Jersey starting early Saturday, and that will eventually bring the end of this warm spell. Accompanying the front will be a line of light showers on Saturday morning. That rain could be a bit more persistent and steady as the front slows and/or stalls over South Jersey through Saturday afternoon. Rain totals will be light overall, but it could turn into a damp day along and south of I-195. (There's still a bit of uncertainty regarding the timing and spread of Saturday's rain - be prepared for a period of wet weather, but don't be surprised if it's ultimately clear.)

High temperatures on Saturday will take a step downward, but should still end up above normal in the mid 60s or so. But be warned: Saturday will be the grand finale of this round of Indian Summer...

Cooldown Part 2: Sunday

By Sunday, our next high pressure system will be moving over the Northeast U.S. While that means we will return to sunshine across the Garden State by late Sunday morning, it will also bring the return of some chilly autumn air. Highs on Sunday will struggle to climb to the mid 50s - a far cry from near 80 degrees on Friday! Get those jackets ready...

We will stay at or just below normal through early next week, with highs around the 60 degree mark. Overnight lows may fall briefly into the 30s on Monday and Tuesday mornings. That's cool enough for some frost, but I think we'll avoid any widespread freezing temperatures through the first half of the week.
