Dems talk tax hike again

There is buzzing in Trenton again about a possible Democratic tax hike plan, specifically raising the gas tax.

Assembly Speaker Vinnie Prieto (D-Hudson) is kicking off a series of hearings later this fall to explore ways to replenish the Transportation Trust Fund.

The broke fund pays for everything from pothole filling to bridge repairs.

Prieto said that the state has been borrowing hundreds of millions of dollars to keep it afloat, but wants to find a permanent and sustainable source of funding.

But, insiders believe the hearings are nothing more than a political cover to raise the gas tax.

Many feel Democrats could push for a hike as high as 25-cents-per-gallon.
