The gunman in Monday's shooting was confirmed as 68-year-old Thomas S. Matusiewicz of Edcouch, Texas, the former father-in-law of Christine Belford, 39, who was fatally shot along with her 47-year-old friend Laura Mulford.

Belford, a resident of Newark, Delaware,  was mother to four children according to WPVI TV. She and David Matusiewicz were embroiled in a custody dispute that had dragged on for years in the Delaware courts. David had kidnapped their 3 children in 2005, taking them to South America before being captured in 2009.

Thomas & David Matusiewicz were living in Texas and came to Delaware for court. David is currently in prison.

Mulford came to court as support for her friend Belford.

Matusiewicz, armed with a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun, died after exchanging gunfire with police.

Authorities were awaiting the autopsy results to determine whether Matusiewicz was killed by police or shot himself.

State police said Belford and Mulford were at the courthouse for a child support arrears hearing for Belford's ex-husband, David Matusiewicz. He was being questioned and was in custody on a federal probation technicality.
