Shortly after next week's election, Assemblyman Reed Guscoria of Mercer County will introduce a bill that will de-criminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Make it a minor offense, like a traffic ticket, with a small fine and no criminal record. He has 17 co-sponsors, so the measure has some legs. Guscoria is also a Municipal Prosecutor who says the 26 thousand possession cases a year are a great waste of time and resources. For example, he says every scrap of he 26 thousand confiscated joints has to be tested in police labs. And the offender seldom goes to jail anyway. Fourteen states and a number of cities have already done this. It's time New Jersey followed them.
