POINT PLEASANT BEACH — A third person drowned while swimming in the extremely rough surf of the Jersey Shore on Sunday.

Point Pleasant Beach police chief Joseph Michigan said it appears Glen Carullo, 60, of Waldwick died just after 2 p.m. after being pulled out of the water by police officers, Jenkinson's security and several bystanders. Carullo was unconscious and had no pulse when he was pulled out.

Carullo was hospitalized and pronounced dead an hour later.

Around the same time, Joell Lanfrank, 44, of Seaside Park became distressed in the ocean at O Street in Seaside Park. Police, rescue and several off-duty nurses tried to revive Lanfrank before she was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where she died.

Lanfrank was the owner of a Forked River yoga studio, Lovelight on Main, and remembered her on its Facebook page.

"This beautiful light has left us too soon," the post read. "Our friend, our teacher, a piece of our hearts. Taken by the ocean that she loved."

A 34-year-old Piscataway man died at Seven Presidents Park in Long Branch late on Saturday afternoon. Long Branch Police have not released any information about the incident.

Rescue crews reported dozens of rescues over the weekend as Hurricane Maria made its way northward through the Atlantic Ocean. Despite the high risk of rip currents and the closure of the beach an Belmar, swimmers seeking relief from summer like weather couldn't resist the ocean.

Chief Meteorologist Dan Zarrow said that despite the alerts issued day after day for several weeks now the danger is real, given the numerous rescues and unfortunate deaths.

"With Hurricane Maria passing close to the Jersey Shore, the risk for rip currents and rough surf will continue through at least Thursday, and possibly longer. Until then, there really is no good reason to go in the ocean beyond your ankles," Zarrow said.

"Do not go in the water unless its guarded. We don't want anyone swimming in unguarded beaches. The water this time of year with all the hurricanes off the coast creates strong rip currents, big waves. You're swimming at your own risk," Michigan said.
