NEWARK — A corrections officer fired at a person he saw trying to break into ta car on Friday, authorities said.

The off-duty officer fired at the person around 5:30 a.m. on Crown Street after a confrontation, but the shot did not hit the person, Newark Police told ABC 7 Eyewitness News. The person was taken into custody by the officer.

The names of the officer and the person have not been disclosed.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office  is handling the investigation and has not yet returned a message.
