Police are looking for whoever was driving a car that hit and badly hurt a 4-year-old before driving away in North Jersey.

According to Madison Police, the car is believed to be a white 2013-2014 Subaru Outback.

Police said that on Thursday evening, they received calls of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle on Main Street in front of a Burger King. Once there, police found a young child lying on the westbound side of the road in front of the Rosewood Condominiums, police said.

The child had been walking with two others and attempting to cross the street prior to being struck, police said. They didn't specify how old the other two people were or what their connection to the child was.

Following the crash, the vehicle fled the scene and continued to travel west on Main Street toward the center of Madison, police said. Witnesses saw the vehicle traveling in the shoulder of the roadway for approximately one mile before striking the victim, police said.

According to a report by NJ Advance Media, the child was in critical condition as of Friday.

Police are asking anyone with information to the Madison Police Department at 973-593-3000 or Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit at 973-285-6200.
