Everyone escaped safely from an apartment building fire on Saturday, including a resident's dog, thanks to a South Brunswick police officer.

The fire broke out in a building at the East Garden Apartments around 3:23 p.m. according to South Brunswick Police. Officer Brian Luck, who was helping to evacuate residents, noticed a small dog at the rear sliding door of an apartment where no on appeared to be home according to spokesman Dennis Yuhasz.

Yuhasz said Luck, who is allergic to dogs, let the dog out and stayed with the pup until its owner arrived.

There were no reported injuries to any residents or firefighters.

The apartments were deemed to be uninhabitable despite the efforts of the South Brunswick Fire Department along with departments from Monmouth Junction, Kendall Park, Kingston, East Brunswick and Plainsboro.
