JERSEY CITY — A man was killed by a container that broke free from a crane he was using to lift it at a rail yard on Monday.

Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said a wire holding the container snapped, sending the container to the ground as the crane collapsed on top of him.

The man was working for a company contracted by Norfolk Southern, according to Morrill, who did not disclose the man's identity.

Morrill said Norfolk Southern Rail Police are leading the investigation. OSHA is also investigating the incident.
