Congressional Backing Grows For Gun Control Debate

Congressional gun rights supporters are showing a growing willingness to consider new gun-control legislation in the aftermath of the Connecticut school shootings.

But they also say a comprehensive anti-violence effort must also address mental health issues and the impact of violent video games.

Among those who say they’re open to the idea is Rep. Mike Thompson, a former co-chairman of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus. The California Democrat is a hunter and a wounded Vietnam veteran. He’s been named to lead a Democratic task force on gun violence.

Another is Republican Jack Kingston, a 10-term congressman elected with strong National Rifle Association backing.

Kingston says “put guns on the table.” But he says video games and mental health should be on the table, too.

And he says nothing should be done immediately. As he put it, “There is a time for mourning and a time to sort it out.”
