Point Pleasant Beach and its boardwalk bars appear headed toward a compromise over what time the taverns must close.

Pt. Pleasant Beach Bars Will Close Early

In a vote described as a compromise, a narrow majority of the Borough Council agreed late Tuesday to allow the bars to stay open until 1 a.m., instead of the current 2 a.m. closing. But that vote is contingent on the bars agreeing to the 1 a.m. closing time.

The bar owners did not immediately decide whether to accept the borough's offer. They said they planned to confer Wednesday with state alcohol regulators to discuss their options.

The council adopted a midnight closing law earlier this year in an attempt to cut down on early-morning rowdiness by bar patrons returning to their cars in residential neighborhoods. It was to take effect this Sunday.
