Commuters leaving New Jersey started the week with a triple whammy of traffic problems.

An early morning accident around 5:30 a.m. on Route 95 in New York blocked two lanes, according to New Jersey Fast Traffic's Bob Williams. "It doesn't take much to build those inbound delays on the GWB," said Williams, who said delays of 90 minutes quickly backed traffic up into New Jersey. The accident was cleared up around 6:30 a.m. but as Williams noted, "its a cliche but the damage was done" with delays of 45-60 minutes afterwards from all the approaches.

The heavy delays also created 30 minute delays on NJ Transit into the GWB bus terminal.

NJ Transit was not a good alternative as Amtrak overhead wires created 30-minute delays in-and-out of New York Penn Station. PATH cross honored rail tickets at NY 33rd, Newark Penn Station & Hoboken while NY Waterway accepted rail tickets and passes from Hoboken.

NJ Transit riders took to Twitter to express their frustration with the delay.

Drivers were also hit with higher tolls that went into effect on Sunday on the GWB, as well as the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels. It now costs $15 to use one of the crossings paying cash, up from the $14 it’s been since December of 2014. EZ-Pass users get a break — $10.50 during off-peak hours, and $12.50 during peak times.
