One man was killed and another was injured when two cars crashed on a northern New Jersey highway.

State police say the crash on Route 78 in Union County occurred around 2 p.m. Sunday. Both cars were eastbound when they collided near milepost 48 in Springfield.

The names of the drivers involved were not immediately disclosed.

Both men were taken to hospitals, where one was pronounced dead a short time later. The other was being treated for injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

No other injuries were reported in the accident, and it was not immediately known if either driver had passengers in their vehicle.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
