Coast Guard aids distressed kayaker

PORT MONMOUTH, N.J. (AP) — The Coast Guard has come to the aid of a man whose kayak capsized in waters off central New Jersey.

(Toniann Antonelli, Townsquare Media, NJ)

The man was near Port Monmouth when the kayak filled with water and became unstable on Tuesday. He used his cell phone to call 911, and rescue crews from Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook soon located him.

The kayaker was wearing a lifejacket and clinging to his kayak when he was found. A rescue boat crewmember threw him a heaving line to pull him away from shoal water toward the Coast Guard boat.

Once in the boat, crewmembers determined that he didn’t need medical assistance. His name was not released.

The man had initially tried to swim back to shore, but had to stop after developing a severe leg cramp.
