The Clifton City Council narrowly approved a request to allow a rainbow flag to be raised near City Hall later this month in honor of LGBT pride month.

The Council narrowly approved the measure Wednesday during a work session meeting. Mayor Jim Anzaldi cast the tie-breaking vote. According to the Clinton Pride Flag Raising group on Facebook, a flag raising ceremony is set for June 25 at 1 p.m.

During the council meeting, officials discussed whether to raise the pride flag in an area separate from where the flags of other countries, such as the Palestinian flag, are displayed, according to an NJ Advance Media report.

The LGBT advocacy group, Garden State Equality, began urging the city council to approve the measure last month. Clifton now joins several other New Jersey towns such as Newark, Atlantic City and Jersey City that have already raised rainbow flags in support of the LGBT community.

The 2010 Census shows that 243 same-sex couples lived in Clifton that year, making it the second highest in Passaic County, following Paterson, which had 290 same-sex couples, an NJ Advance Media article states.

In a post on the Clifton Pride Flag Raising Facebook group Wednesday, JoAnne Nikovits MacBeth posted a plea to city council members.

“Please do not let the loud voices of a vocal MINORITY stop you from raising the Rainbow Flag for Gay Pride. Clifton, as the United States in general, is an inclusive society,” MacBeth wrote. “As we honor the heritage of a number of our citizens by raising flags for their country of origin, so should we too do this for our LGBTQ brothers and sisters who still must struggle every day with discrimination. A yes vote says, ‘they’re here, they’re queer, we’re used to it.'”
