TJM Atlantic City completed its purchase of the Claridge on Monday. It used to be its own casino but most recently was part of Bally’s Atlantic City.

The purchase price wasn’t revealed.

The new Claridge will operate as a non-casino hotel. The 500-room building will be closed for renovations until its grand opening, planned for May.

When it operated as a casino, the Claridge was the smallest gambling hall in Atlantic City. It became known for its widely advertised motto, “Smaller Is Friendlier.”

It opened in 1929. Guests included Marilyn Monroe, Al Capone, Princess Grace of Monaco, Frank Sinatra, and Nucky Johnson, the real-life inspiration for HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.”
