Gov. Chris Christie will discuss New Jersey's efforts to prepare for the approaching super storm Saturday, the day after Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency in neighboring New York.

Christie was campaigning in North Carolina and was scheduled to return to the state late Friday after a rally for Republican gubernatorial candidate Pat McCrory.

The first-term governor was criticized for flying to Florida for a Disney World vacation ahead of a December 2010 snow storm that pummeled the state.

But he gained fame for telling New Jerseyans to "get the hell off the beach" before Hurricane Irene's arrival last year.

Christie's office said the state's Office of Emergency Management had been activated at 8 a.m. Friday.

Cape May County has begun evacuating barrier islands.
