KEANSBURG (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R)  says he will help with the campaign of New Jersey's little-known Republican candidate for U.S. Senate.

Christie says he can do fundraising and make campaign appearances for Jeff Bell, who won a low-turnout race among four candidates last month for the right to face incumbent Democrat Cory Booker in the November general election.

But Christie was not particularly effusive in his praise for Bell when asked about him at a news conference Monday in Keansburg. "I look forward to working with Jeff. He's the nominee of our party."

Bell returned to New Jersey to run for the Senate after spending more than 30 years as a consultant in Washington. His campaign centers on raising interest rates and putting U.S. currency on the gold standard.
